YEAR OF THE TRAIL

PROJECTS

F3ST is keeping busy during the Year of the Trail! We have three major projects planned for completion in 2023 including trail and trailhead construction, land acquisition and easements, and trail designations.

PLANS

F3ST is currently managing a feasibility study for all of McDowell County funded by the Dogwood Health Trust. We have also submitted grants to study sections in Buncombe County.

EVENTS

F3ST has events planned for every month for the Year of the Trail including our annual 100 Mile Challenge, Hike-and-Learns, Trail Maintenance Workshops, and Trail Workdays!

2023 PROJECTS

CANAL BRIDGE

The Canal Bridge Project in Burke County will connect the two sections of Lake James State Park, as well as providing safe pedestrian and bike access to a locally-used unsanctioned route.

OLD FORT TRAILHEAD & PARK

A PARTF project will complete the FFST Trailhead and Arrowhead Park with 1500 linear feet of trail and an additional 1.2 miles adjacent to this project.

CO-LOCATION WITH OVT

FFST is co-located through sections of Burke and McDowell counties with the Overmountain Victory Trail. Thanks to CTF, we will be able to work with OVTNC on trail projects.

VISION

To promote, plan, build, maintain, and advocate for the Fonta Flora State Trail with diverse trail partners.

MISSION

The mission of the Friends of Fonta Flora State Trail is to connect mountain communities in western North Carolina through the Fonta Flora State Trail to promote physical health, mental wellness, economic development, and outdoor recreation with trail partners for the enjoyment and education of all people.
